set protocols isis interface ge-0/0/1.212 level 1 priority 105

The Kane Chronicles

The Red Pyramid

After being released from the Rosetta Stone, Isis takes Sadie Kane as a host. She keeps her presence hidden from Sadie for some time, but does boost and develop her magical abilities to a degree greater than they should be. Once Sadie becomes aware of Isis’s presence, Isis begins to try to convince Sadie to let her take control, but Sadie remains stubborn and refuses. Throughout Sadie’s quest to stop Set, Isis offers advice and information and during their final battle with Set, the pair work as one, forming a deep bond while doing so. Despite this, Sadie asks Isis to leave her, although Isis leaves some of her essence in Sadie’s amulet. Although, after that, Sadie was tempted to try it on again, some time later.

The Throne of Fire

After Sadie channels Ma’at for the first time, Isis and her mother visit her and guide her. Isis’s voice often appears to Sadie, offering her hints or helpful information. Sadie also discovers the key to using her power is through sympathetic magic and finding a common feeling, event or emotion. When Ra is returned to the heavens, Isis is a bit disappointed that her son Horus cannot continue to rule over the gods. Because of Sadie’s role in this, she treats her a bit coldly, but is more polite to her than Horus is to Carter.

The Serpent’s Shadow

Sadie continues to channel Isis’ power and during the battle in the Hall of Ages, welcomes Isis in once again. The two battle the rebel magicians and combine their powers for the execration spell on Apophis’ sheut. The combination of Isis, Sadie, Carter and Horus’ powers in the spell destroy the sheut and Apophis. Afterwards, like the other gods, Isis leaves the Earth.

Cults of Isis

Temples

Temple of Isis in Philae, Egypt

Most Egyptian deities started off as strictly local, and throughout their history retained local centers of worship, with most major cities and towns widely known as the hometowns to their deities. However, no traces of local Isis cults are found; throughout her early history there are also no known temples dedicated to her. Individual worship of Isis does not begin until as late as the 30th dynasty; until that time Isis was depicted and apparently worshipped in temples of other deities. However, even then Isis is not worshipped individually, but rather together with Horus and Osiris- the latter of whom being both her brother and husband (marriage between brothers and sisters of the Royal family were common in Ancient Egypt to keep the Royal bloodline ‘intact’). Temples dedicated specifically to Isis become wide-spread only in the Roman times.

By this period, temples to Isis begin to spread outside of Egypt. In many locations, particularly Byblos, her cult takes over that of worship to the Semitic goddess Astarte, apparently due to the similarity of names and associations. During the Hellenic era, due to her attributes as a protector, and mother, and the lusty aspect originally from Hathor, she was also made the patron goddess of sailors.

Throughout the Graeco-Roman world, Isis becomes one of the most significant of the mystery religions, and many classical writers refer to her temples, cults and rites. Temples to Isis were built in Iraq, Greece, Rome, even as far north as England where the remains of a temple were discovered at Hadrian’s Wall. At Philae Temple Complex Aswan her worship persisted until the sixth century, long after the wide acceptance of Christianity- this was the last of the ancient Egyptian temples to be closed, and its fall is generally accepted to mark the end of ancient Egypt.

Priesthood

Priestess of Isis, Roman statue Second century C.E.

Little information on Egyptian priests of Isis survives; however it is clear there were both priests and priestesses of her cult throughout her history. By the Graeco-Roman era, many of them were healers, and were said to have many other special powers, including dream interpretation and the ability to control the weather by braiding or combing their hair, the latter of which was believed because the Egyptians considered knots to have magical powers.

Isis cult beyond Egypt

The cult of Isis rose to prominence in the Hellenistic world, beginning in the last centuries B.C.E., until it was eventually banned by the Christians in the sixth century. Despite the Isis mystery cult’s growing popularity, there is evidence to suggest that the Isis mysteries were not altogether welcomed by the ruling classes in Rome. Her rites were considered by the princeps Augustus to be «pornographic» and capable of destroying the Roman moral fibre.

Tacitus writes that after Julius Caesar’s assassination, a temple in honor of Isis had been decreed; Augustus suspended this, and tried to turn Romans back to the Roman gods who were closely associated with the state. Eventually the Roman emperor Caligula abandoned the Augustan wariness towards oriental cults, and it was in his reign that the Isiac festival was established in Rome. According to Roman historian Josephus, Caligula himself donned female garb and took part in the mysteries he instituted, and Isis acquired in the Hellenistic age a «new rank as a leading goddess of the Mediterranean world.»

Roman perspectives on cult were syncretic, seeing in a new deity merely local aspects of a familiar one. For many Romans, Egyptian Isis was an aspect of Phrygian Cybele, whose orgiastic rites were long naturalized at Rome, indeed she was known as Isis of Ten Thousand Names.

Among these names of Roman Isis, Queen of Heaven is outstanding for its long and continuous history. Herodotus identified Isis with the Greek and Roman goddesses of agriculture, Demeter and Ceres. In Yorùbá mythology, Isis became Yemaya. In later years, Isis also had temples throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia, and as far away as the British Isles, where there was a temple to Isis on the River Thames by Southwark.

In Egyptian Mythology

Isis is a goddess from ancient Egypt. As she is depicted in Smallville, she is a goddess (in fact, one of the major members of the pantheon) of magic, wisdom, and medicine. She was also the keeper of a person’s secret name (which only she and the person’s mother knew). She was the wife of Osiris, in Smallville, with Smallville actually capturing the elements and myths of the goddess very well. However, in the myths, Isis actually was able to reform her husband in the Land of the Dead, with the help of her son Horus (god of the sky, war, and pharaohs) and Anubis (god of funerals, justice, and the afterlife). Also, Horus was able to defeat Set, and became the new pharaoh.

Trivia

  • Isis was referred to as «she who knows the names,» and may have known Set’s secret name, but was unable to tell Sadie because the secret name can only come from the mouth of the god or from the person closest to him. In Set’s case, this is Nephthys.
  • The name Isis means «throne» in Ancient Egyptian.
  • Isis’ original name is Aset; the name ‘Isis’ was her Greek name.
  • Her Greco-Roman equivalent would be Hecate/Trivia, Demeter/Ceres, Hera/Juno, Athena/Minerva.
  • Her Norse equivalent are Freya and Gullveig.
  • Equivalent to Odin and Freya, she and Thoth are two the mighties wielders of magic among the Egyptian Gods.
  • She has a few things in common with Lilith in Cassandra Clare’s The Shadowhunter Chronicles:
    • They both are described as deceitful, manipulative, ambitious mother yearning for power and eager to set their mates or «sons» outstanding through underhanded methods without guilty conscience and regret.
    • Their significant others (Osiris, Serapis, Sammael, Lucifer) were gone down/killed or/and then became the rulers of Underworld/Hell.
    • Both of them are disliked by the creator of their own pantheons: the relationship between Ra and Isis sharply deteriorated as she dethroned him; Lilith was cast out of Eden and replaced by Eve for her disobedience.
    • The pregnancy of both of them were tough: Isis was forced to escaped when conceiving Horus in the wake of Osiris’ death; Lilith’s penalty hindered her from gestating infants who then died upon birthing, both of which, however, led to two polar characters for them:
    • They have turned others’ children (Anubis and Sebastian) against the original parents of the latters and taken the beloved, respected mother-like places instead.
    • Both of their blood sons, Horus and Sebastian Morgenstern, seem to share the arrogant, violence-oriented, obnoxious, self-centered, mean and demeaning traits alike.
    • One of their most notorious disservices are in the form of snake; Isis poisoned Ra with the snake made from His own substance; some people argue that Lilith was the snake tricking Adam and Eve into tasting the forbidden fruit.
    • It’s recorded that they both are renowned as the pagan deities of witchcraft, wisdom, earth and motherhood across Europe, West Asia and North Africa.
